🌱 Reception – What We Are Learning
📚 Literacy
Children will develop a love of books, stories, rhymes and songs. They will listen to and join in with nursery rhymes, explore stories and begin to talk about characters and events.
Children will develop their phonological awareness by listening carefully to sounds in words, including:
- Recognising initial sounds
- Rhyming
- Alliteration
- Clapping syllables
- Recognising their own name
- Hearing and saying the initial sound in words
🔤 Phonics
Children will access Read Write Inc. Phonics, a proven synthetic phonics programme that supports early success in reading, writing and spelling.
Children will begin by learning Set 1 sounds, developing their ability to recognise sounds, blend them orally and begin to use them when reading and writing.
🔢 Mathematics
Children will develop their understanding of numbers through practical, hands-on activities. They will focus on:
- Counting
- 'Subitising'
- Recognising and representing numbers to 5
- Developing 1:1 correspondence
- Matching numerals to quantities from 0–5
- Exploring different representations, including counters, Numicon and dice patterns
🗣️ Communication & Language
Communication and language skills are developed throughout the whole Reception day.
Children will have regular opportunities to:
- Talk with adults and their friends
- Take part in group discussions and circle time
- Listen and respond to stories
- Sing songs and rhymes
- Develop their vocabulary
- Express their ideas, thoughts and feelings
Where appropriate, children will also receive support through Speech and Language Therapy (SALT) interventions.
💚 Personal, Social & Emotional Development
Children will develop confidence, independence and positive relationships with others.
Rules, routines, boundaries and high expectations will be consistently reinforced throughout the year. Children will learn to:
- Follow routines and classroom expectations
- Build positive friendships
- Express and manage their feelings
- Become increasingly independent
- Develop resilience and confidence
🏃 Physical Development
Children have daily opportunities to develop both fine and gross motor skills.
Fine motor development includes:
- Threading
- Cutting
- Playdough
- Peg boards
- Mark-making and early writing
- Developing pencil control
Children who need additional support with their fine motor development will receive targeted opportunities.
Gross motor development is supported through daily access to our outdoor provision, whatever the weather. Children can develop their climbing, balancing, coordination and movement skills through activities and equipment including climbing frames, balancing equipment, water and sand play.
🎨 Expressive Arts & Design
Children will explore different ways to express themselves creatively through art, music, role play, stories and imaginative play.
They will:
- Explore emotions through drawing and painting
- Develop increasing control and detail in their drawings
- Explore colour, shape and different materials
- Create representations of people and objects
- Develop imaginative stories through small-world play
- Use animals, dolls, figures and other resources to create their own narratives
🌍 Understanding the World
Children will begin to understand themselves, their families, their community and the wider world.
They will:
- Talk about themselves and their families
- Explore their own life stories and family history
- Talk about people who are important to them
- Notice similarities and differences between themselves and others
- Develop vocabulary to describe what they see and experience
- Learn that people have different beliefs and celebrate special occasions in different ways
- Explore the natural world and their environment
